Brewers sign Eddie Leonard to minor league deal

Brewers add infielder Edith Leonard Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports on a minor league deal. The agreement includes an invitation to spring training.

Leonard will now join his fourth team in the past four seasons. He spent last year in Atlanta’s minor league system. The Braves signed him in late March after he was waived by the Tigers. Leonard was elected as a minor league free agent last week.

The Dodgers signed Leonard as an international free agent in 2017. MLB.com ranks Leonard as the No. 8 prospect in Los Angeles’ 2022 class. In 2021, he posted a huge 145 wRC+ across two minor league levels.

Los Angeles designated Leonard for assignment midway through the 2023 season. They eventually struck a deal with Detroit. Leonard slashed .302/.374/.530 ​​in 40 games for Triple-A Toledo. He will only play 82 games in 2024 due to injuries. When Leonard was on the field during the season, his at-bats were slightly above league average.

Leonard hit 20 homers and added 11 steals in 494 games last season for Class 3A Gwinnett. He played primarily in the infield with the Stripes, making six starts at first base, 28 starts at second base, 35 starts at third base, and one start at shortstop. He also made 32 starts at DH, including one in right field. Leonard primarily played shortstop early in his career but has been stuck at the diamond in recent seasons.
