Oilers reportedly interested in Penguins’ Tristan Jarry – Hockey Writer – Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers have been subject to speculation over the past few weeks, given their inconsistent goaltending and inability to find a way to put together a winning streak, and reports linking them to someone new seem to come every day. Most recently, they have been linked to Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues, but earlier today, they were linked to Tristan Jarry of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 30-year-old Jarry has played in seven games this season, winning five of them, with a goals against average (GAA) of 2.60, a save percentage (SV%) of 0.911, and a goals saved above expected number (GSAX) of 4.8. The veteran has played in 300 games in his career, winning 157 of them with 22 shutouts, a 2.75 GAA and a .909 SV%.

As Weeks mentioned in his report, Jarry has played in Edmonton before, spending parts of four seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Edmonton Oil Kings between 2011-12 and 2014-15.
With Calvin Pickard and Stuart Skinner continuing to struggle, it’s no surprise that the Oilers continue to be linked to a new goaltender. They need to make some changes if they want to have a chance to turn things around and make a deep playoff run again, so the fact that they appear to be getting aggressive on the trade front is a positive sign.
How does trade work?
Jarry is signed through the 2027-28 season with a salary cap hit of $5,375,000. The Oilers need to find a way to free up a ton of cap space to make a trade work, which shouldn’t be too difficult. The departures of Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak give them $5,350,000 to work with, and they can make some other personnel moves to afford him.
There are a few things to remember here. The Penguins likely don’t want to bring in another goaltender, so the Oilers will have to trade Skinner elsewhere. On top of that, Jarry does have some trade protection with a 12-team no-trade list, but considering he’d probably be happy to return to Edmonton with some history in the city, that shouldn’t be an issue.
After all, convincing the Penguins to give up on Jarry was a problem. Considering they have three NHL-ready goaltenders, they might be interested in moving one, but they won’t give up just one.
Effectively, the Oilers would have to give them a conditional first-round pick in Kulak, Maxim Berezkin and Jarry. If the Penguins end up retaining him somehow, the deal could include a second-round pick or a rookie like Quinn Hutson or Bo Aki.
Regardless, it appears the Oilers are finally getting aggressive on the trade front and looking to make some moves. After Skinner’s recent struggles, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him moved and the Oilers making changes between the pipes.
There seems to be smoke behind a potential move, but nothing seems imminent at the moment. For now, fans can only continue to pay attention to see if the speculation comes to fruition.
