Emilio Nava pulled off a surprise victory over top-10 star Matteo Berrettini at the BCI Seguros Chile Open on Tuesday.

The 79th-ranked team in the PIF ATP Rankings cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory in their first-round match in San Diego. Nava, who made his main draw debut at the clay-court ATP 250, saved all three break points he faced and won 84% (32/38) of his first-serve points against Berrettini, according to Infosys ATP Statistics.

“Berrettini is a super tough opponent with a strong serving ability,” Nava said after the 87-minute victory. “Especially with the altitude, it’s going to be a tough battle, but mentally I’m ready and I’m playing well. I’m positive and just competing.”

Nava’s victory over world No. 57 Berrettini was his biggest win in the PIF ATP Rankings since defeating Zizou Burgess in Toronto last July. The 24-year-old American reached the semi-finals of last year’s Challenger de San Diego before winning the Challenger de Concepcion and has now won 10 of his last 13 matches in Chile. Nava will face Francisco Passaro or Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in the second round.

Elmer Moller also recorded a major victory in his first-round match in the Chilean capital on Tuesday. The Dane defeated Roman Andres Burruchaga 7-6(4), 0-6, 6-4 to win the ATP Tour main draw title for the first time. With the win, Moller moved up 10 spots to No. 117 in the PIF ATP live rankings and will face top seed Francisco Cerendolo for a quarter-final spot.

Vilius Gaubas and Mariano Navone were the other Santiago players who advanced early on day two. Lithuania’s Gaubas defeated local favorite Matias Soto 6-2, 6-3 and will face Dino Prizmich in the second round. At the same time, Rio semifinalist Vit Kopriva retired in the first round, and Navone advanced 3-6, 6-0, 3-1.
