Denmark’s Elmer Moller capped off the 2025 ATP Challenger Tour season by winning his third title of the season on Sunday.
The 22-year-old won the Maia Open, defeating Slovakia’s Andre Martin 6-4, 6-1 in the final. After winning the championship, Moller rose to No. 121 in the PIF ATP rankings, one step closer to breaking into the top 100 for the first time.
“It’s unbelievable. In fact, a month and a half ago I wasn’t sure if I was going to play this year,” Moller said at the postgame press conference. “It was good for me to take a break from playing games, training and being at home. I feel like I came in here with a new energy that I’d been missing for a while. I’m glad I did that for myself. It paid off in the end.”
This is not the first time Muller has won in Portugal this year. He also won the Oeiras Challenger in April. His second Challenger title of the season came in July in Iasi, Romania. All four of Moller’s career Challenger crowns were won on clay.
Samuel defends consecutive championships
Englishman Toby Samuel ended his season in dominant fashion. The former University of South Carolina star, who graduates in 2024, has won back-to-back Challenge titles, most recently at the Manama Challenge in Bahrain. He defeated Ilya Simakin 6-0, 6-2 in the 48-minute final.
The 23-year-old Samuel did not drop a set all week in Manama and is currently at a career-high 267th in the PIF ATP rankings. Samuel was crowned champion a week ago in Soma Bay, Egypt. He also won the ITF M15 title in Sharm el-Sheikh in early November.
