Eastbourne: Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova is injured and withdrawn before championship defense

Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova withdrew her thigh injury from Eastbourne four days before the SW19 title defense began.

The Czech team was brought to three games in both South Coast, beating British Harriet Dart and Jody Berrag in the first and second rounds.

She will face France’s Varvara Gracheva in the quarterfinals but quit before the match begins.

Two-time main singles champion Krejcikova initially felt the problem on Wednesday and said it was “became worse” overnight.

“I’m sorry to have to quit because my right thigh is a little sore,” the 29-year-old said.

“I think Wimbledon is better for the next few days, just to take a break and see what’s going on and fix that.”

Krejcikova will open on Tuesday as the defending women’s champion in Wimbleon, who has played in just six games after a long back injury.

She lost the first round last week in the Queen’s first round before saving the match against Dart and Burrage.

Last year, the world ranked 17th in the Wimbledon final defeated Italy’s Jasmine Paulini.
