Coleman Wong continued to make history at the BOC Hong Kong Open on Wednesday, beating Gabriel Diallo to seal a quarter-final spot.
Just a day after he defeated Mariano Navone to become the first player to win a main draw match on behalf of Hong Kong in the history of the tournament, the 21-year-old Huang defeated Diallo 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals. Wildcard Huang, ranked No. 150 in the PIF ATP rankings according to Infosys ATP statistics, saved 11 of the 15 break points he earned to seal a victory that lasted 2 hours and 29 minutes.
“It sounds unreal,” Wong said, reflecting on becoming the first ATP Tour quarterfinalist from Hong Kong in the Open era. “A lot of people came out to support me today. Gabriel is a really good player. We pushed each other to the limit and in the end, I went 5-2 but he came back 5-5. I was like, ‘Wow, I don’t know if I can finish this match’. I just kept believing in myself and always believed in what I’ve been working on the past few years.
“It’s not easy being an athlete from Hong Kong, from such a small place. To reach the quarter-finals of an ATP event, I just want to keep going.”
Standing in the way of Wang’s bid for a spot in the ATP 250 semifinals will be top seed Lorenzo Musetti. The Italian defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals in Hong Kong for the second consecutive year.
Musetti currently leads Etcheverry 3-0 in the Lexus ATP Head2Head Series. The 23-year-old, who is making his Nitto ATP Finals debut in 2025, moved up one spot from Felix Auger-Aliassime to sixth in the PIF ATP Live Rankings after winning his opening match in Hong Kong.
Nuno Borges also claimed a second-round win in Hong Kong on Wednesday. The Portuguese defeated former world No. 3 Marin Cilic 7-5, 6-3 and will face 2024 champion and third seed Andrei Rublev in the quarter-finals, who started his 2026 season by defeating Wu Yibing 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the final match of the day.
