Coaching Notes: Mets, Padres, Leiper, Rays

Many teams are still assembling their coaching staffs for the 2026 season, and earlier tonight there was news of some departures from the Rangers. Let’s take a look at more coaching-related rumors from around the league…
- this metropolis interviewed priest Third base/infield coach Tim Leper has taken on an unspecified role on New York’s coaching staff, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. SNY’s Andy Martino reported yesterday that the Mets are close to hiring for the third base coaching vacancy, so it seems logical that Leper could be Mike Sabo’s replacement. Lepel has been San Diego’s third base coach for the past two seasons, and with the Padres searching for a new head coach, it makes sense that Lepel would explore other options if the Padres’ staff is about to undergo a shakeup. Leper spent nearly 30 years as a coach and manager in the minors and international baseball, in addition to serving as the Blue Jays’ first base coach for five seasons (2014-18).
- this ray They are looking for a new assistant hitting coach, Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Brady North previously held the position, but the team announced last month that North would take on a possible new role in the organization after four years on the coaching staff. Topkin noted that Ozzie Timmons is one of the internal candidates for the assistant hitting coach position, which would mark Timmons’ return to Tampa after a four-year absence. Timmons served as the Rays’ first base coach from 2018-21 before spending three years as hitting coach with the Brewers. Tampa Bay has Timmons back as a special assistant and traveling coach within the organization ahead of the 2025 season.
