Chris DeMarco leaves Warriors to become new free head coach

Golden State Warriors assistant coach Chris DeMarco is taking the next big step in his career. The four-time NBA champion is leaving the NBA to become the new head coach of the New York Liberty, giving him his first chance to lead a professional team.

Warriors’ surprise move after running long distance

News of the agreement became public on Friday when ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on social media. He wrote, “The New York Liberty have agreed to hire Golden State Warriors assistant coach Chris DeMarco as their new head coach.”

Charania also noted that DeMarco has been a member of the Golden State Warriors since 2012 and has won four NBA championships during that time. He currently serves as the head coach of the Bahamas men’s national team, adding more experience to his resume.

Liberty executives and DeMarco’s agent Brian Elfs finalized the terms of the contract on Friday, according to Charania.

An important part of Steve Kerr’s team

DeMarco served in multiple roles during his time with the Warriors. He was a trusted assistant under Steve Kerr and played a steady role in the team’s success. While Kerr and Stephen Curry were often the focal points of the Warriors from 2014 to 2022, DeMarco’s behind-the-scenes work helped shape the franchise’s identity.

Coaches in the NBA change frequently, but DeMarco stayed with the Golden State Warriors for nearly 14 years. His ability to adapt and contribute in different areas has made him a respected figure within the organization.

Sabrina Ionescu’s new challenge

Now, DeMarco will move to the WNBA to coach superstar Sabrina Ionescu and a Liberty team that’s in contention for a championship. The move gave him his first chance to run his own program. It also puts him in an environment of high expectations, with a roster built to win right away.

For DeMarco, the decision marks a new beginning after years of development for the Golden State Warriors. For the Liberty, it brings in a coach with championship experience and a background in the modern NBA — two qualities that fit the direction of the franchise.
