game review
The first 20 minutes were filled with clean hockey, with no teams scoring or taking free throws. The Golden Knights took seven shots to the Kraken’s nine.
Seven minutes into the second quarter, Brayden McNabb was brought into the penalty area for interfering with Jared McCann. With a minute and a half left before a minor penalty, Marty Beniers tossed the puck into the Kraken’s offensive zone. There was chaos on the backboard and the puck was tipped to Vince Dunn. He passed the ball to Jordan Eberle near the back of the net. Despite having his back turned, Eberle passed the puck to Beniers in front of the net. He scored the first goal of the game.
Early in the third quarter, Ryan Winterton was assessed a two-minute penalty for tripping Zach Whitecloud. Similar to Seattle’s previous power play, the Golden Knights took 30 seconds of their power play opportunity. Jack Eichel passed the puck to Mark Stone. He picked it up and threw it to Pavel Dorofeev. He slapped the puck into the net to tie the game.
The two teams were tied at 1-1, with each side scoring one point and entering overtime to determine the winner. As time expired, it looked like the game was headed to penalties, prompting the Kraken to take action. With 13 seconds left, Dunn had the puck at the blue line. He passed the ball to Beniers, who circled around looking for space. He found McCann in front of the net and passed the ball to him. McCann scored the game-winning goal with three seconds left in overtime.
Next step
The two teams will resume play on Tuesday, October 14. The Kraken will begin their first road trip, starting in Montreal against the Canadiens. The Golden Knights will continue their journey north, where they will take on the Calgary Flames.
