Charlotte Hornets waive veteran point guard Spencer Dinwiddie

With less than a week left before the 2025-26 regular season, teams are still making final roster cuts. The Charlotte Hornets are one of them.

On Thursday afternoon, NBA insider Shams Charania shared the Hornets’ latest roster decisions. Veteran point guard Spencer Dinwiddie was waived by Charlotte, he reported. He signed a one-year contract worth $3.63 million with the Hornets. However, the team had to part ways with a guaranteed contract on the roster before the start of the regular season. Spencer Dinwiddie is an odd man.

Spencer Dinwiddie waived by Hornets days before 2025-26 season begins

Spencer Dinwiddie has been traded multiple times during his NBA career over the past few years. From the 2021-22 season to the 2023-24 season, Dinwiddie will be traded once every season. He started the 2021-22 season with the Washington Wizards, who later traded him to the Mavericks. Spencer Dinwiddie was traded to the Nets during the 202-23 season with the Mavericks. This is his second time playing in Brooklyn. In the 2023-24 season, the Nets traded Spencer Dinwiddie to the Los Angeles Lakers.

He ends the 2023-24 season with the Lakers and becomes an unrestricted free agent. Spencer Dinwiddie signed a one-year, $3.3 million contract with the Mavericks through the 2024-25 season. Dinwiddie played in 79 of 82 games for Dallas, starting 30 of them. Dinwiddie is in his 11th career season, averaging 11.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.

This offseason, the 32-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Charlotte Hornets in July. He persisted throughout training camp but was waived the day before the preseason finale. Will the veteran guard sign with another team for the 2025-26 season? Spencer Dinwiddie may have to wait until the season starts. If a team is experiencing increased injuries to its guards, Spencer Dinwiddie is one of the best free agents available.

By waiving Spencer Dinwiddie, the Hornets signaled they are comfortable with their depth at guard. LaMelo Ball is the starting point guard. There is no doubt about it. Tre Mann is listed as the backup point guard for the 2025-26 season. In the 2024-25 season, he played 13 games and made zero starts. In addition, KJ Simpson and Antonio Reeves make up for the Hornets’ point guard depth.
