Charles Barkley slams NBA Chauncey Billups scandal

Trail Blazers’ chaotic start takes dark turn
The Portland Trail Blazers are kicking off the 2025-26 NBA season in a strange way — both on and off the court. Despite a 4-2 record under interim coach Thiago Splitter, the team’s success has been overshadowed by suspended head coach Chauncey Billups’ legal issues.
Billups recently signed a contract extension and now faces an FBI indictment for allegedly serving as a decoy in a gang-rigged poker game. The case shocked the league and raised questions about integrity and oversight. If convicted, Billups, once hailed as a Hall of Fame point guard, could be permanently banned from the NBA.
Lineup adjustments and on-field success
On the court, Portland is thriving under point guard Jrue Holiday and emerging forward Deni Avdija, both of whom were recent Western Conference Player of the Week finalists. Tumani Kamara and rookie Donovan Klingan stepped up on defense, while veteran Jerami Grant stepped into a productive backup role.
The Trail Blazers’ emphasis on defensive pressure and ball-sharing has energized the team, despite Billups’ absence.

Barkley talks “Inside the NBA”
The off-court controversy reached new heights when Charles Barkley addressed the situation on ESPN’s “Inside the NBA.” The panel discussed the league’s handling of the Billups indictment and the ongoing gambling scandal involving Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier.
Rozier was previously accused of faking an injury to influence betting during the 2022-23 season with the Charlotte Hornets. Although the NBA investigated, a formal ruling was never issued — a decision that Barkley harshly criticized.
“Chuck, help me figure something out,” host Ernie Johnson asked. “You said the league gave the ball to Rozier … but they didn’t throw the ball to Chauncey Billups.”
“Those are two different things,” Barkley responded. “Leave Chauncey out of it.”
Barkley accused Rozier of risking his career and the NBA’s credibility, calling the situation “reckless and embarrassing.” He defended the league’s stance on Billups, suggesting officials were unaware of the FBI investigation until the allegations became public.
Portland season clouded
While Trail Blazers players focus on maintaining momentum, the team faces increasing scrutiny. Billups’ trial could reshape his career and the direction of the franchise. For now, Portland’s resilience on the court stands in stark contrast to the chaos off it.
