Canucks beat Kraken in overtime on strength of Caufield pairing – Hockey Writers – NHL News

Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield scored his second goal of the game in overtime on Tuesday to lift the Habs to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Seattle Kraken. It was a home opener for the Canadiens, who held a three-game lead going into the game but had to tie the game in the end, forcing overtime to save at least one point. They ended up getting two (just like Caufield), much to the delight of the Bell Center faithful.

With five minutes left in the third period and the Canadiens leading 3-2, Kraken defender Jamie Oleksiak beat Sam Montembeault on a screen at the point to tie the game for the third time. Instead of regaining the lead (which happened every time Kraken scored), the Habs relinquished a 4-3 lead three minutes later when Jared McCann’s Brandon Montour shot was blocked and Montembeault made 18 saves, a modest save for the home team on a night honoring the recently deceased legend Ken Dryden.

Canadiens forward Ivan Demidov tied the game in dramatic fashion with just under three minutes remaining. With Mason Marchment’s penalty on defensive back Alexander Carrier expiring, Patrik Laine passed to Demidov, who hit the ball in close and beat a sprawling Joey Daccord, who made 17 saves in the loss.

This was Carrier’s 300th career game. To celebrate, he also provided a second assist for Alex Newhook’s opening goal, who coincidentally was also celebrating his 300th game. However, Demidov also played the biggest starring role in that game, finishing a beautiful lead-in pass to Newhook at the edge of the net, who had no choice but to pass the ball to Daccord. The Calder Memorial Cup favorite’s heroics were arguably dwarfed by those of Caulfield, who also scored to make it 2-1 after Jaden Schwartz equalized. Caufield scored from the penalty spot after Chandler Stephenson delivered the ball in the corner.

Things were a little different in overtime, with each team suddenly struggling to generate offense, with defenseman Lane Hutson passing the puck to Caufield after winning a faceoff deep in Kraken territory. Caufield continued to press Daccord and scored the winning goal.

The teams next play Thursday, with the Kraken visiting the Ottawa Senators in the second leg of a six-game road trip with a 2-0-1 record. Meanwhile, the Canadiens are coming off a 3-1 win against the Nashville Predators in their second of four headstand games so far.
