Canadiens sign Alexander Texil to one-year contract – The Hockey Writers – Montreal Canadiens

Most recently, the St. Louis Blues placed forward Alexander Texil on unconditional waivers due to contract termination. Shortly after he cleared waivers and became an unrestricted free agent, it was announced that he had signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Montreal Canadiens.

Texil is 26 years old and has played 8 games for the Blues this season and contributed 1 assist. During his career, he scored 40 goals and contributed 51 assists for 91 points in 240 games between the Blues and Columbus Blue Jackets, averaging 0.38 points per game.

He was drafted by the Blue Jackets with the 45th overall pick in the second round of the 2017 NHL Draft, and while he has been a decent offensive contributor throughout his career, some fans questioned his two-way play and consistency, leading to him being terminated and ultimately finding a new home with the Canadiens.

Texil was placed on regular waivers before the Blues placed him on unconditional waivers to see if anyone would claim him, but he cleared waivers and both parties agreed to release him from the contract and give him a fresh start.

Texil spent the 2022-23 season on loan with the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League before returning to the NHL due to personal reasons.

The Canadiens don’t play until Wednesday (Nov. 26) when they take on the Utah Mammoths, where Texil will make his debut with his new team.
