Canadiens extend Ryan Hutson’s contract for 8 years – The Hockey Writers – Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens announced that they have signed defenseman Lane Hutson to an eight-year, $70.8 million contract extension. The deal has an average annual value (AAV) of $8.8 million.

The deal comes after NHL insider Elliott Friedman said Saturday night that both sides wanted to keep contract talks out of the public eye. Now, less than 48 hours later, both parties have agreed that the young blue liner is locked in for the long term.

Hutson is now signed until 2033-34

The 21-year-old Hutson lit up the NHL with his outstanding performance last season. In 82 games, he contributed 6 goals and 60 assists for 66 points. That was enough for him to win the Calder Trophy for the NHL’s top rookie in the 2024-25 season. Now, Canadiens fans can watch him in action in the NHL for the next eight seasons beyond the 2025-26 season.

Since Hutson is locked up until 2033-34, that means the Canadiens’ core will be fully signed long-term, at least until 2030. The first of their core players to need an extension is Nick Suzuki through 2030. The job the Canadiens front office has done to secure their future is incredible. Now, we just have to see if this team can bring home Canada once they enter the Stanley Cup window.
