Daniil Medvedev has participated in six consecutive Nitto ATP finals. Can the 2020 champion stage a comeback and make his seventh consecutive appearance in the season finale?

Medvedev entered the Rolex Shanghai Masters in 20th place at the PIF ATP Live Event in Turin, barely in contention to qualify for the Nov. 9-16 event in Italy. But the 29-year-old advanced to the semi-finals in Shanghai and climbed to 15th place in the live competition.

Medvedev’s 2,360 points trailed eighth-placed Lorenzo Musetti by 1,075 points. Although there is not much time to rush into the qualifying spots, Medvedev has a chance. The former world number one will try to make up ground at this week’s Almaty Open, an ATP 250 event, where he is the second seed. Musetti is the top seed at the Fortis European Open in Paris, Brussels.

Medvedev also plans to compete in the 2022 ATP 500 event in Vienna, where he won the title, and the Rolex Paris Masters, which gives him a chance to score 1,750 points in the next three tournaments.

Musetti and No. 6 Ben Shelton are trying to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time. Ninth-ranked Jack Draper also attempted to make his debut but will be ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injury.

Everyone else currently in the qualifying position has competed in the year-end tournament. Novak Djokovic is a record seven-time Nitto ATP Finals champion and Alexander Zverev has claimed glory at the event twice.

Tenth-ranked Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the U.S. Open semifinals, setting the stage for his qualifying run. The Canadian is currently 530 points behind Musetti and is the second seed in Stockholm. Casper Rudd (2,495 points), ranked 11th, is the second seed at the BNP Paribas Nordic Open in Stockholm, and Holger Ruhn (2,490 points), ranked 12th, is the top seed.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals. Sinner is the defending champion and Alcaraz will be chasing his first title in the tournament.
