In addition to Conroy, the Flames also announced that president of hockey operations Don Maloney, assistant general manager and senior vice president of hockey operations Dave Nonis and assistant general manager Brad Pascual have all signed two-year contract extensions. These contracts were signed at the start of the 2025-26 season and run through the 2027-28 season.
NHL Rumors: What direction are the Calgary Flames headed?
The Flames’ management team consists of Assistant General Manager Peter Hanlon, Special Advisor to General Manager Jarome Iginla and Senior Director of Hockey Operations Mike Burke. Therefore, extending Conroy’s contract is crucial considering Iginla returns to the team this season.
That’s a good thing for the Calgary Flames.
Conroy has done some great work building a young core. Plus, you know who the team needs back in the fold to keep him. #flame

Reports emerged earlier this week asking why Craig Conroy didn’t re-sign Don Maloney since he had publicly commented on the direction of the organization. Despite the fact that the season has already begun, comments about not seeking to rebuild but to regroup and remain competitive have sparked outrage among fans.
NHL Rumors: New Jersey Devils vs. Calgary Flames
Just before the American Thanksgiving holiday, reports broke that Craig Conroy was about to sign a two-year contract extension with the Flames.
Tonight we heard the Calgary Flames and general manager Craig Conroy are making progress on a contract extension.
There’s been a lot of local discussion about this over the past few days…not sure when that will be finalized, but we’re coming to that conclusion.

“I mean, obviously, I’m extremely proud to be the general manager of the Calgary Flames and to have the leadership team with me,” Craig Conroy told FlamesTV. “We know we still have some work to do, but we’re really looking forward to it. But it’s a great day for me and my family.”
It’s been a rough start to the season for the Calgary Flames. They scored 96 points last season and failed to make the playoffs, but they weren’t where they wanted to be. There are a lot of rumors surrounding this team, including Rasmus Andersen, Nazem Kadri, and Blake Coleman. While Kadri isn’t going anywhere until he decides to leave, and the team may make an offer to the Flames, they can’t turn it down.
NHL Rumors: Calgary Flames won’t trade Nazem Kadri at this time
As for Anderson, the team was always in need of a right-handed shooting guard. Anderson is also focused on this season and trying to make the Olympics for Team Sweden. Given the guard market, the Flames may be out of Anderson’s price range. However, if he feels like he wants to be part of the solution and view the Flames as winners, he might stay. But if the team continues to struggle, teams across the NHL will keep calling.
The pending UFA will generate significant interest from teams around the league as Conroy and company face a difficult decision regarding his future with the organization. Not to mention, if they want to stay competitive, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Anderson and let the younger players develop?
Should Calgary’s Rasmus Andersen case have been resolved?
Despite reports of disarray within the front office, Conroy has a vision for the team: building the team through drafting and development while maintaining a strong senior leadership team. However, as Conroy said, these things take time.
“I think one thing is patience. You have to be patient,” Conroy said. “Everyone likes things to be immediate these days, but that’s not the case. You have to take your time and build it slowly and build it the right way. I feel like that’s probably the most important thing in building a team. We can’t rush and try to do something fast. We have to take the time to develop the young players and get them integrated into the team.”
Whether players want to admit these things are a distraction or not, maybe a Craig Conroy extension is just what the Calgary Flames need to get back on track.
