BOYNE raises $125,000 for local charities

BOYNE Golf PGA professionals celebrate 29 years of raising funds for Manna Food Project and First Tee-Northern Michigan, impacting families and youth through golf

HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. – The Harbor Cup golf event, which brings together PGA professionals from the Boyne Golf and Petoskey/Harbour Springs areas, has become part of the Northern Michigan vacation scene. Over the past 29 years, the event has raised more than $1.2 million to benefit local charities Manna Food Project, First Tee-Northern Michigan and PGA HOPE (Helping our Patriots Everywhere).

The annual fall event is held September 29-30 at the Hidden River Golf & Casting Club near Petoskey, Michigan. The PGA Professional from the BOYNE Golf property competed in a fun 54-hole Ryder Cup style match with the PGA Professional from the Petoskey/Harbor Springs area golf course (Team Harbor). Harbor won this year’s event 16-8, but the real winner was Charity.

This year, Team BOYNE professionals raised over $125,000 for designated charities. The donations come from fundraising efforts in the year before and after the event, as well as support for the Harbor Cup Charitable Fund, a constituent fund of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation. Many donations come from members of Boyne Country Club and Bay Harbor Golf Club, merchandise sales and pro/am golf tournaments in the area.

The Boyne Golf Harbor Cup Team is proud to Manna Food Project ($90,000), PGA Tour Hope ($25,000), and First Tee – Northern Michigan ($10,000) through the Harbor Cup Charitable Fund.

Manna Food is a food bank and warehouse that provides food to more than 35 food pantries and agencies in Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet counties. This year’s charitable donations will help provide approximately 156,250 meals to community members. Additionally, First Tee is an organization that promotes character development and life values among area youth through the game of golf. This donation helps expand programming opportunities and reach more young people. PGA HOPE introduces and teaches golf to veterans and active duty military personnel to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional health. This donation will help secure and improve the development of their 6-8 week courses.

“The Harbor Cup is always a special event for all the players, but what’s really important is the good it allows us to do,” said Corey May, Crooked Tree Golf Club head pro and Team BOYNE’s Harbor Cup captain. “For nearly three decades, this tournament has become one of Northern Michigan’s most cherished traditions, mobilizing our golf community to raise meaningful funds for local charities, an impact far greater than any scorecard. We could not have done this without the support of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, members of Boyne Country Club and Bay Harbor Golf Club, area businesses, vendors and homeowners. We are extremely proud to continue this tradition of bringing people together to make a difference throughout Northern Michigan.”

The Boyne Harbor Cup team includes captain Corey May and assistant captains Josh Richter, Bernie Friedrich, Bob Prange and Jeff Ross. Players include Casey Powers, John Myers, Steve Niezgoda, Zach Zondlo, Chaz Babin, Scott Pussehl, Avry Freel, Brian Jakeway, Bob Wilson, Katie Milliman and Mac Montagne.
