Why front-to-back dispersion is more important than you think

The professional club fitting “interview” portion is one of the most important parts of my conversations with clients at True Spec Golf.
This is where I can learn about their playing history, see where they are playing today, and set goals for where they want to go. The fitter and player work together to outline the current state of the equipment and define reasonable training results.
As you might expect, common goals include greater distance and better dispersion. However, what most golfers don’t realize is that these two goals can sometimes be at odds with each other.
Actual carrying distance value
When I talk about distance, I focus on Carrying distancenot the total distance. If my 6-iron carries 150 yards but rolls 175 yards, that total doesn’t do much good on the course, especially in the tough conditions that are common in tournament play.
When players tell me they want better dispersion, I challenge their values north/south (from front to back) dispersion reaches thing (from left to right). As a fitter, I learn more from a player’s ability to control front-to-back distance than from how tight their shot pattern is around the target line.

Proper braking force through the bag—from wedges to driver—is a sign of properly installed equipment. Ball height, spin, shaft profile, swing weight, offset, loft and length all play a role. When players achieve proper launch and spin, it means they hit the ball solid. Nothing is more important in golf than solid contact – and that’s where all good things begin.
It’s also important after kick-off
Front-to-back consistency doesn’t just apply to irons. This is equally important when installing a driver. I understand the urge to chase distance, especially in the right circumstances, but prioritizing the longest shots you’ve ever hit over a setup that produces repeatable distance and consistent shots can be fool’s gold.
Consider this example: Player A and Player B have the same swing speed, angle of attack, and club path. Player A selects the driver that produced the two longest shots during the fitting, but is also his shortest driver. It takes extra effort to play well. Player B chose an easy-swing setup and kept his shots within 5 yards, even though his longest shots didn’t go that far.
Both players hit the ball approximately ten times per round. Player A hit the ball twice before Player B – but those were the only two fairways he hit. Player B finds eight of the ten lanes. Who might enjoy the sport more over a season?
Probably Player B.
