When Ben Shelton advanced to the quarterfinals of the Nexo Dallas Open earlier this week, the American was asked about his girlfriend, soccer star Trinity Rodman, who recently invited U.S. women’s national team coach Emma Hayes to dance with her after scoring a goal.
Would Shelton let his father and coach Brian Shelton do the same?
“I think there are better opportunities for a lot of things in life,” Shelton said. “I thought that was one thing that would never happen, so I wouldn’t even ask the question.”
But the second seed never said anything about himself. So when Rodman arrived in Dallas for Shelton’s semifinal at the ATP 500 event, where the southpaw defeated defending champion Denis Shapovalov, she did the same celebratory dance in the stands.
What was Sheldon’s reaction? Smile and do the same thing.
“This was the second game my girlfriend showed up to on semifinal day,” Shelton said. “I was 2-0 up in the semifinals when she showed up, happy Valentine’s Day!”

Shelton will compete for the trophy against Tyler Fritz on Sunday. Their previous two Lexus ATP Head2Head matches were played separately.
It’s safe to say that if Shelton wins, another dance could happen.
