Australian Open Million Dollar Single Point Slam: Amateur Jordan Smith beats world’s best

The event, held four days before the Australian Open starts on Sunday, features 48 players, including 24 top professionals.

Eight amateur winners from the state championships, eight players who qualified in Melbourne and a further eight wildcards (a mix of celebrities and invitees) make up the remainder of the field.

The competition begins with a game of “rock, paper, scissors,” with each game worth one point and the winner advancing in a knockout format.

The Australian Open hosts the first single Grand Slam event in 2025, but with a prize of A$60,000 (£29,808), Russia’s Andrei Rublev is the only top ten player taking part.

It is the latest attempt by tennis authorities to attract new interest in the sport, following the introduction of a separate mixed doubles tournament before the main draw at last year’s US Open.
