Australian Open men’s final 2026: Why Novak Djokovic needs Melbourne win more than Carlos Alcaraz

The match between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz will make history no matter who wins the Australian Open men’s singles final on Sunday.
The 38-year-old Djokovic has won 24 Grand Slam titles since September 2023. If he achieves another success, he will surpass Margaret Court’s record of Grand Slam titles.
Alcaraz, 22, was one of the younger players who stopped Djokovic.
The Spaniard has already lifted six major trophies and victory in Melbourne would seal his first Australian Open title and make him the youngest player to win all four Grand Slams.
Unlike Alcaraz, Djokovic had no time on his side.
That’s why this final is so important for Djokovic – it could fuel his drive to glory.
Heading into the Grand Slam season opener, Djokovic insists he doesn’t view the past two weeks as a “make or break” in his ambition to reach the magic number of 25.
It felt like Djokovic was trying to release the pressure on himself, and that continued into Sunday’s match.
Asked what the match meant to his career, Djokovic said: “A Grand Slam final, there’s a lot at stake. But it’s no different than any other big tournament I’ve played.”
Only Djokovic knows whether he truly believes this.
There is no doubt, however, that the more time passes, the less likely it is that he will get the 25th title he craves.
