The Rio Open hosted by Claro is doing everything it can to reduce the environmental impact of the tour.
Through Rio Open Green, the ATP 500 Championship’s environmental initiative, the event achieved a milestone in 2025 and continues to reduce emissions while raising fan awareness.
Last season, the campaign neutralized 1,819 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e), with 69.2% of waste recycled, reused or composted. The clay-court event sets an example of a UN-certified carbon-neutral event, with emissions fully offset since 2020.
Marcia Casz, general manager of the Rio Open, who was introduced by Claro, said: “These data prove that it is possible to host a major sporting event with an increasingly smaller impact on the environment while delivering significant economic results for cities and communities.”
The Rio Open Green Plan revolves around three pillars: emissions reduction, fan awareness and waste management.
The tournament works with ENGIE to calculate and offset greenhouse gas emissions associated with tournament operations and fan travel. All emissions are offset through UN-certified carbon credits generated from renewable energy production at the Jirao hydroelectric plant.

With approximately 40% of fans traveling to the Rio Open from other states, the focus is on helping fans understand their carbon footprint. An interactive carbon calculator is part of the ticket purchase process, allowing fans to specify their mode of transport, understand the impact of their trip and even choose low-impact travel options such as cycling or public transport.
Thanks to Rio Green Plan’s waste management strategy, by 2025 only 30.8% of waste generated by events will be sent to landfill. A range of initiatives are in place focusing on reuse and recycling, reducing single-use plastic and supporting responsible disposal.
The Rio Open presented by Claro is a prime example of how tournaments, players and partners come together through ATP services. As a global sport with more than 60 events in nearly 30 countries, the ATP recognizes its unique platform and responsibility to lead sustainable development.
