ATP introduces new rules for extreme heat competition starting from 2026 season

The new rules are based on wet bulb temperature (WBGT), which measures heat stress in direct sunlight. It involves observing temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover.

If the WBGT reaches 30.1C or higher in the first two sets of a best-of-three match, either player may request a 10-minute break to cool down.

Under the supervision of ATP medical staff, players can rehydrate, change clothes, shower and receive coaching.

When the WBGT exceeds 32.2C, the race will be suspended.

The statement added: “The new heat rules provide a structured, medically supported approach to managing extreme heat with the aim of safeguarding player health while improving conditions for spectators, officials, players and event staff.”
