It’s front-loaded with a $60 million signing bonus. Necas also received a full no-transfer clause for the first seven years of the deal. Not to mention, he’s currently earning $6.5 million, which is a huge improvement.

The Avalanche acquired Necas from the Carolina Hurricanes as part of the first trade involving Mikko Rantanen. Rantanen was later traded to the Dallas Stars and troubled the Avalanche in the playoffs. But president Joe Sakic and general manager Chris MacFarland are adamant they won’t pay Rantanen more than Nathan MacKinnon’s $12.6 million AAV.
While it was quiet on the Western Front, the Avalanche knew this deal needed to be done. They couldn’t afford to be in Rantanen’s situation again. But the Avalanche also knew that with Necas, it would be easier to get him to follow McKinnon’s direction. Plus, Necas works really well with Avalanche. In 11 games this season, Necas has scored 13 points (seven goals, six assists) while playing alongside Nathan MacKinnon.

Since joining the Avalanche last season, Necas has 41 points (18 goals and 23 assists) in 41 games. He played last season with the Carolina Hurricanes, scoring 55 points (16 goals, 39 assists) in 49 games. Amid contentious contract negotiations, he gave himself a chance, signing a two-year bridge deal worth $6.5 million per season.
Martin Necas is looking for a higher position at Carolina. The Hurricanes saw what he could do with them, and he’s doing the same thing against the Colorado Avalanche.

The Colorado Avalanche’s next opponent is Karl Makar. It was always believed that Makar would get more than MacKinnon. Maybe AAV is worth $12 million. But Sakic and McFarland want to create a cap structure moving forward so they can add. But when Makar becomes eligible, he will reset the defense market.
