Yankees choose Carlos Carrasco; Jack Woodford trigger opt out

Right-handed Jack Woodford According to MLBTR’s Steve Adams, he chose a minor league deal with the Yankees and became a free agent. Additionally, Yes Network’s Jack Curry reports that the Yankees are choosing right-handed contracts Carlos Carrasco Starting with Triple-A Scranton, he will be active ahead of tonight’s game against the Dodgers. Since the Yankees have multiple spots available, there is no need to make a corresponding 40-man move, but it needs to make room for Carrasco on the active roster.

The 28-year-old Woodford, the 2015 Cardinals first-round pick, made his debut in a shortened campaign in 2020. The rookie campaign was underperformed as he released a 5.57 ERA in multiple innings of relief roles, but he does enjoy a stronger season in 2021 and 22. During these two years, Woodford scored 3.26 ERA (121 ERA+) with 116 frames. During this period, he only had 15.4% of his opponents facing a 7.5% walk rate, although he made up for his lack of strikeout stuff and his orders were insufficient due to 45.8% of the ground ball, partly due to part of his order. However, his lack of strikeouts caught up with him as he released a 6.23 ERA in 2023, hitting 47 2/3 innings in 47 2/3 innings, followed by the Cardinal in November in November.

Woodford has been bouncing in the league as a traveler ever since. In the 2024 season, he allocated time between the White Sox and the Buccaneers, winning him a 7.97 ERA in professional games with a 4.94 FIP in 35 innings. At the third-level A level, the right-hander released a solid enough 3.93 ERA in 94 innings. His results weren’t enough to keep him on the roster with the Pirates during the offseason, but after he was assigned as a mission, he was elected to a free agent to reach a deal with the Rockies’ minor league in the winter. Woodford was awarded his release by the Rockies before opening day when he didn’t break camp with the club and then locked up with the Yankees, who issued a 4.54 ERA for him in the 39 2/3 innings work.

Woodford’s return to the Grand Slam seems likely to be when the Yankees were forced to use seven pitchers in a blowout loss to the Dodgers last night, but the right triggered his opt-out clause and now the Yankees will now return to free agents after they decide to turn to Carrasco. This will be the second Yankees this season, 38-year-old. The right-handers left questions in many injured rosters, which were in the opening roster, but Carrasco was far from the era of mid-rotating arm at Cleveland at this time and surrendered 5.91 ERA and 5.30 FIP in 32 innings with the Bronx earlier this year. Despite the lack of numbers, Carrasco is a great option to provide quantity when the Yankee bullpen is sure to get burned, and he was widely praised in the Grand Slam, which is a great clubhouse.
