As the wheelchair draw progressed, there was a lot of discussion about the plan and last-minute changes, and different courts provided players with different conditions.
“It’s a completely different environment,” said Hugwayt, who won his sixth Tag Team Championship with partner and British man Brit Gordon Reid for the sixth time.
“Gody [Gordon Reid] Said when we played doubles. The ball is slower and the ball picks up more clay because there is more clay on these courts.
“On the outdoor court, it’s a little lively, it’s a little bounced and has a short back. It completely changes the tactical game of the game, and usually you know you’re going to play on the show court, so you’ll practice in that court in advance.”
As an elite athlete who competes for the highest prize in tennis, there are a lot of ideas for wheelchair athletes – not only in the Grand Slam but also on tour every week.
“I’m not here alone and criticize the game often because I know we’re players and I’m so grateful to be in such an event, celebrating wheelchair tennis and showing the game on a big stage, but what happened today is unacceptable.”
“I think there has to be some standards and you know, we don’t hear players we haven’t heard of.
“We tried to ask the court to be pushed back, but unfortunately, the priority is for fans to watch the women’s finals on screen rather than giving wheelchair players more time to warm up and prepare for the Grand Slam singles final.
“It’s not that I’m making excuses for my performance, but that Torquito is exactly the same as me. I’m very happy with my performance.
“It’s more about the players and our welfare, and actually treating us like a professional, because I can guarantee Jannik Sinner or [Novak] Djokovic will be told “Sorry, you can’t have proper practice, you have to go to court within 30 minutes”.
He added: “You put all the games in these games. That’s not the reason I lost the singles final – Torquito was a better player in the bigger moments – but it’s something people have to consider people have to consider – I know they’re thinking about it with other players.
“They didn’t take us into consideration and I’m very disappointed with that.”
