Hello friends, welcome to this version of Rogers Report! I enjoyed a week at home and then headed to Oakmont for the U.S. Open, a practice held on Travelers and Championship Day for the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. It will be a long and exciting two weeks, let me know if you have any suggestions anywhere (especially ice cream)! Without a quick look at the best moments of the U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills, we can’t move on, let’s start there.
Public review of American women
All my favorite moments at the U.S. Women’s Open were on the 72nd hole. I love watching Linn Grant and Ingrid Lindblad wait eagerly for a bath with Champagne after the winning putt. I love watching Maja Stark’s caddie Jeff Brighton, accepting his caddie award and then wearing the cheese award he received from USGA CEO Mike Whan.
I really liked it when Maja Stark received a FaceTime call from Annika Sorenstam. We often hear senior major champions calling on new major winners to congratulate them, but we rarely see it in real time.
Screaming her timely phone call to Sorenstam. I won’t forget these moments anytime soon.
Nor will I forget the golf ball I presented in an allies leadership group that I attended earlier this week on Erin Hills. Ally, USGA and Erin Hills staff have invited now female college athletes, sports business majors and young business professionals, from the Greater Milwaukee area to a group and network event, designed to boost their confidence and use golf as a business tool as they enter their careers.

The longest day in golf
When I hear the term “the longest day in golf”, I often think about the time I traveled through Seattle to San Diego on a work trip (I didn’t know much about how airlines operate in my life). In other parts of the world, the longest days of golf are probably the most touching people on all golf courses, here, Tour professionals, elite junior golfers and many Scratch golfers in between try to qualify for the U.S. Open.
Max Homa may not qualify, but he spent a lot of kid days hanging out after the turn and signing.
While we will miss out on big names like Max Homa and Rickie Fowler next week, there are good stories of men who are qualified. Alistair Docherty voted in Oakmont two weeks after the crash.
Matt Vogt, a dentist from Indianapolis, recently lost his father and will play at the U.S. Open next week. Mason Howell, 17, is a junior in high school and will play with the best players in the world. Stories like this always make me appreciate the particularity of the U.S. Open and make me happy to watch these guys play in person on site.
What’s the ending of Phil?
Leaf Golf is in Virginia this week and when asked about the U.S. Open and his plans (or lack thereof), Phil Mickelson was very transparent.
ask: Phil, I’m curious about what you think of Oakmont, which may be your first time opening the U.S. Open, and the possible end of your life-long win to our national Open.
Mickelson: “I haven’t thought too much about it yet. It’s very likely, but I’m not really thinking too much. What I think of is the similarities this week’s course is similar to what we’ll see next week. We’ll work like next week next week, because we’ll follow suit in the range of a week. The first game of our second half, we all need and want, and work hard to make the second half of LIV great.
OK, let’s focus on the first two sentences there. Mickelson has missed only two U.S. openings since 1990, so this is probably his last feeling, and it feels big. Even if he doesn’t think about it now, I have to assume he will think about it in Oakmont. As someone who thought about his last high school basketball game a few weeks before it happened, I would love to see the emotions that Mickelson brings next week.
Amazing collaboration
Good news for all motorsports and golf gear: both Pennzoil and PXG have teamed up to create a limited edition driver. If you are like me, you might be wondering what earth oil and golf equipment have in common. Answer? drive.
this I want to see the level of creativity in brand collaboration. More in 2025 (and beyond)!
