Jordan Spieth excels in the memorial

Jordan Spieth had some trouble on Friday’s 11th hole in the memorial, but he still walked away on par.

Jordan Spieth took off his golf shoes, took off his socks, rolled up his pants, and carefully wades into the trouble area on the par 11 hole of the second round of Friday.

Eventually, when he tried to balance in the dirt, he admitted: “I don’t know how deep this water is. I think the water is too deep, Michael,” Spieth said.

Spieth decided to drop the decision instead of a hero trying to shoot from the free throw zone – he still scored the standard.

“I fell because I couldn’t stand,” Spieth said after signing a 69-under 69 on Friday. “The creek is too deep, so I can’t actually stand in the water. I can get to the green, which is a big reason why I drop down. If I drop a drop, I can still get to the green, and if I’m going to throw the green, I’ll only get 20 feet 30 yards from it.”

Friday, the 11th at Muirfield Village was a buzz for Spieth, who often found himself in these multiple situations.

He left it by the water, but was driven to the bank. He considered playing it, but eventually chose to fall and hit 3 from the fairway. His hole has 268 yards but knocks the green fruit into the audience, nearby trolley paths and off-road areas.

Fortunately, his ball fell on a tree so he hit a pretty 5-foot ball and put the putter into par.

“I’m not sure how he did it.”

“I’m very lucky with the third lie,” Spieth said. “It’s really nice to sit and if it goes to another yard I’m not going to hit it because I’ll be under the tree. The lie is good and the greens are a little soft. So overall it’s a really good saving just to not have to make a long putt or anything.”

The par for 11 kept Spieth even a day behind him, and he continued running to finish his round, getting four birdies to shoot on the rankings in his last six games. His 36-hole distance is three holes, tied for fifth place, with co-leaders Nick Taylor and Ben Griffin.

You can watch the third round of memorial on the golf channel at 2-5:30 a.m. ET, and CBS took over Spieth’s 5:30-7-7:30 PM paired with Tom Hoge and Tom Hoge and Tees and closed Saturday at 2:37 p.m.
