Top college football runners weigh the trade-offs

The road to college football is full of stress, commitment and potential – for the three top defenders in the 2026 grade, this road narrows with the scope of commitment decisions. Hollywood’s own all-around phenomenon, Jackson, Alabama, the stars of Bruce with a reclassified schedule and East Texas find clarity in the chaos – all facing a defined moment. Visits are getting bigger and bigger, whispers are getting bigger and bigger, and decisions are getting closer. In the increasingly high college football recruiting game, motivation is everything, and this summer, the pendulum runs between dreams and destinations.

A tug of war in South Florida
For five-star guard Derreck Cooper from Chaminade-Madonna in Hollywood, Florida, the trip was never lacking in the suitor. A recent visit to Auburn added fuel has been recruited quickly, but Miami could occupy the internal track. With trips to Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State, the landscape is still smooth—but deep in South Florida’s roots. Hurricanes have long struggled to keep elite talent in the state, and as interest and local momentum surged later, they forced Cooper to do their best.
The Buckeyes offer a familiar face at Jeremiah Smith, a Chaminade alumni who flourished in Columbus. Georgia offers championship ancestry and consistency. Alabama never needs too many courts. But it seems that hurricanes – local hope – seem to gain the greatest attraction. It is undeniable that Speedster will stay at home, and although nothing is ultimate, the motivation for coral gables is undeniable.

Alabama’s quiet confidence in Crowell
Ezavier Crowell is not only another name on the recruitment committee, but also an award that Alabama never seems to have given up. Originally the prospect of 2027, the powerful runner from Jackson, Alabama reclassified into the 2026 class, and from the outset, the Crimson Trend was on his list.
Texas has sensational, Auburn and Georgia are still in the picture – a push, especially Crowell teammate quarterback Landon Duckworth, has also attracted attention. But in the background, Alabama maintains quiet control. They made the foundation, built relationships, and positioned themselves as logical and emotional favorites.
Crowell’s Commitment Date – June 26 – felt more like a coronation than a toss. Despite the noise, nothing has changed the trajectory in recent weeks. Alabama’s lead is still solid, and their development behind the trend is talking.
5-star RB Ezavier Crowell will be officially visited #Georgia This weekend, he told me. 🐶
Crowell ranked first. 32 players and no. Class 2026 has 2 RBs. 👀

Texas stays strong in Edwards Chase
KJ Edwards’ recruitment is a chess game of strategy and timing, and Texas currently has the most powerful pieces. Four-stars from Carthage, Texas once visited Baylor and SMU, but the stops have been switched to Alabama and Louisiana State University, raising eyebrows and expectations.
Despite this, the longhorn seems to be unshakable. New guard coach Chad Scott has built a strong connection with Edwards, a relationship that has proven difficult to obtain. Texas A&M is still pursuing, Tigers and Tides are trying to delay pushing, but Texas offers compelling opportunities, trust and proximity.
In the recruitment landscape defined by volatility, the longhorn provides a consistency—Edwards can shine, grow and stay close to home. Unless there is a dramatic change, the feeling is like walking slowly towards the burnt orange finish.
KJ Edwards, No. 3 RB from Carthage HS, Texas, will provide OV to Alabama.
