Kevin Cook's Tiger Slam wins Golf Book of the Year in 2025

Last week, the winner of the 2025 Charles Tyret Sports Awards Award was announced at the awards ceremony hosted by the London Oval Cricket Stadium.

During the celebration, Sir Chris Hoy’s autobiography, “Everything Matters,” Rebecca Achieng Ajulu-Bushell won “These Heavy Black Bones” for the Sports Writing Award, while Khalida Popal claimed to have won the prestigious overall sports book of the year, “My Beautiful Sisters.”

Among those who judge the winners are composer Tim Rice, actor Rory Kinnear, comedian Miles Jupp, Olympic gold medalist Amy Williams, broadcaster Mark Chapman and Golf365's own Matt Cooper.

Matt is on the golf panel, and the winner is Kevin Cook's The Tiger Slam, an inside story of the greatest golf ever.

Why win, what are the other five nominees?

This is Matt's inner story about the judge…

“I probably read a lot (I have an average of 70 books per year), so being asked to judge this award is one of the best things I’ve been asked to do!

“But it will soon become obvious, and it is also a major responsibility, as writing a book is about investing a lot of time, energy and heart into a project – now my judgment will determine whether these major efforts have won the prize.

“I used to be a member of the book club and the review felt a lot like that experience because every reader had a lot of different thoughts, feelings and opinions on six books. Everyone on the panel worked on golf, but were all in different fields, and not everyone was as firm as I did.

“We all agree that the six books fell into three different camps.

“Dominic Holland’s ‘open connection’ and Andrew’ Beef Johnston are in a sense easier (they are looking for laughs), and both also show that golf makes a living.

“The Dutch book is a novel, inspired by his love for the glory of the traveler golfer. Such a player finds himself unexpectedly caught in the public focus, and therefore, whether a young man still needs help from others. The proceeds of the book are passed directly to Anthonony Nolan Charity, and the group is attracted by the book.

“Johnston’s writings weave stories of his early years at golf, frustrated by the entertaining nature of some of the hard-earned aspects of golf, and also provide insights into the difficulties of life on the tour.

LIV books shortlisted

“The Golf Wars of Iain Carter and Alan Shipnuck’s “$'liv and liv” both tell the story of Greg Norman’s belly fire, which fell on it.

“The civil war broke out was explosive for the writer, and Carter and the shipbuilding absolutely nailed it. A character as wild as Norman and Phil Mickelson, a regime as vague as Saudi Arabia, is a shocking event, like the news that PGA Tour and Liv met on a secret meeting, it is impossible, it is impossible, it is impossible, it is impossible, it is impossible, it is impossible, it is impossible, it is impossible, it is impossible, it is impossible, it is impossible, it is impossible, it is impossible, it is the first narrative, it is the first two-thirds narrative.

“las, the story, not the author, then got stuck. Recently, it has hardly happened except for lawyer meetings and outsider speculation.

“The last two books are Kenny Reid and Kevin Cook’s 'seve ballesteros' class and Tiger Grand Slam', both of whom handle the lives of two of the greatest players in golf.

“Reid’s book focuses on the Open in 1984, with Ballesteros winning a famous victory ahead of the final green celebration. He also tells the life of Ballesteros back and forth while telling the story of that week.

“Cook’s book tells the story of all four major titles that Tiger Woods won simultaneously in two seasons – the Tiger Grand Slam.

“Like Carter and the shipyard, Cook also has a great story to connect with style. He also unearths good sources of insider details and gossip. As the Tigers might have said: This won him a W.
