Golf Business News – The Royal and Old Golf Club of St Andrews unveils portraits of Sir Michael and Sir Angela Bonnerak

The Royal and Goncial Golf Club in St Andrews unveils a new portrait of Michael Bonallack and Sir Angela, Lady Bonallack in the club’s great room, honoring their lifelong dedication to golf and their outstanding service to the club and the sport.
The work, painted by Paul Brason, was the first double portrait to be displayed in the large room and replaced Sir Michael's early personal portrait. The painting depicts the couple at the height of their amateur golf career, recognizing that their lasting legacy is the most respected and respected figure in amateur golf.
Sir Michael Bonallack Obe remains one of the most accomplished amateur golfers of the modern era. He is a five-time champion of the amateur champion, he plays for England and Ireland in the Walker Cup nine times and is a four-time British amateur champion.
Outside the course, he served as secretary and captain of the Royal and Old Golf Club of St Andrews in an outstanding capacity and served in the official world golf rankings. He was a member of the Golf Service and World Golf Hall of Fame in 1998, played a crucial role in shaping modern games and was admired for his leadership, warmth and integrity.
Angela Bonallack is a strong competitor and pioneer in women's golf. She is an international player in England and the winner of the British Ladies’ Amateur Championship, and she also represented GB&i in Curtis Cup and Vagliano Trophy competitions. During the course, she worked tirelessly to promote women and women’s golf, serving as president of the Ladies’ Golf Association of England and as president of the Ladies’ Golf League.
The committee is overseen by a working group composed of members of the Royal and ancient golf clubs, with the main involvement of the Bonallack family.
Born in London and trained at Camberwell Art College, Paul Brason is a leading portraitist in the UK, working in the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Collection of Windsor Castle and the National Gallery of Scotland. His former nanny included the Duke of Edinburgh, Sir Michael Tippitt and the Duke of Westminster and Richmond. He was awarded the Ondaatje Portrait Award in 1998 and was formerly the former president of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
On May 2, the unveiling of the Royal and ancient golf club Ian Pattinson was held in the club's great room on May 2, with members of the Bonallack family.
Pattinson said: “Sir Michael and Sir Angela, Mrs. Bonnerak have made a great contribution to the golf game and the life of the club. Their dedication, integrity and leadership continue to be respected by the members and the wider golf community. It’s both fit and fit, and they can now commemorate their domination in the great room, and their traditions will be recognized as a generation.
Their son, Robert Bonallack, said: “Our family saw our parents in this way.
Paul Brason added: “It is a great honor to entrust this committee. Working from photographs and archival materials, I want to reflect the vitality and spirit that Michael and Sir Angela embodied during the game. Their contributions to golf on the court and on the court have left a lasting legacy and I hope the painting is recognized with sensitivity and respect.”
Angela, Lady Bonallack, died in July 2022 at the age of 85, and Sir Michael died in September 2023 at the age of 88.
