To extend the 7-year amount of flame to Matt Coronato – Hockey Writer – Calgary Flame

On Saturday (May 3), the Calgary Flames announced that they locked forward Matt Coronato with a seven-year extension each year, worth $6.5 million. After a strong season, after just the playoffs, it’s no surprise that Flames shifted their attention to the offseason and brought back some core pieces, completing this new deal must be at the top of the “to-do” roster.

Coronato, 22, was selected 13th by the Flames in the first round of the 2021 NHL Admission Draft, after having performed well with the Chicago Steel (USHL) in the championship game in the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he scored 48 goals and added 37 assists in 51 games and added 37 assists in 51 games. He joined Harvard in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, scoring 72 points in two seasons.

He made his NHL debut at the end of the 2022-23 season, playing one game for the Flames and not getting a little. He will allocate the 2023-24 season between the Flames and the Calgary Wranglers of the American Hockey League (AHL). In the Flames, he scored 3 goals and added six-point assists in 34 games. In the Wrangler game, he scored 15 goals and added 42 assists in 41 games to score 42 points. This season, he played only two games in the AHL, scoring two goals, while he exploded on the offensive end, scoring 24 goals and adding 23 assists in 77 games to score 47 points.
With Coronato looking to play offensive weapons next season, long-term expansion will extend him to his long-term, which may be like a genius if he continues to improve at his current pace. It's a low-risk contract that ends up looking like one of the best deals in the league in a few seasons.
Expansion level: A+
This extension is great for many reasons. Coronato is still a newcomer to the NHL, with only more than 100 games in his game, and only this season has he started playing a bigger role and found some confidence on the offensive end. Considering his performance on both ends of the ice and whether he can continue to fine-tune his game and maintain his defensive style, he can be one of the best two-way forwards in the league, which also makes Flames fans appreciate his defensive trend.
With salary caps expected to rise dramatically in the next few seasons, finishing the extension now without worrying that the road means the flames may save a lot of money, especially if Coronato breaks through more money next season. Even as other stars on the team try to recompetitively, Coronato may be one of the key reasons why Flames are the earliest to return to the playoffs next season.
While it’s not surprising that the flames led him to a long-term deal, it’s surprising that they got so many deals in terms of price. He has the potential to be the superstar the Flames are looking for and may continue to drop 70 points as he continues to feel comfortable in the NHL, and Flames knows that. Now that he has some stability, I hope Coronato will be doing a massive campaign for the 2025-26 season, I wouldn't be surprised if he's justified in the Frank J. Selke Award for the best defensive forward next season.
