Jannik Sinner called a late game on Tuesday to maintain his record-breaking ATP Masters 1000 sets record while clinching a quarter-final spot at the Miami Open hosted by Itau.
The PIF ATP No. 2 continued his quest to complete his coveted Sunshine Double with a 7-5, 7-6(4) victory over home hopeful Alex Michelson at Hard Rock Stadium. Indian Wells champion Sinner fought back from 2-5 in the second set to complete a victory that lasted 1 hour and 42 minutes and extended his winning streak at the Masters 1000 event to a record 28 sets.

“I felt like my serve helped me a lot today, especially in the big moments and in the tiebreak, so I’m happy about that,” Sinner said. “At the same time, I know that if I want to go far in this game, I have to improve at the back. Tomorrow is a rest day, which will help me and I will try to find a good rhythm in training. Then we will see how things develop.
“It was a completely different situation than last night, so I’m happy with the way I fought. Very close. A very close match with Alex. He’s a tough opponent, so I’m happy with that.”

According to Infosys ATP statistics, Sinner scored 90% of her first serve points (38/42) against Mitchelson. The Italian will be hoping for a similar result against 19th seed Frances Tiafoe or Terrence Altmann in Thursday’s quarter-finals, while also looking to improve on other aspects of his game.
“I didn’t feel my best tennis today, so I tried to find a way,” Sinner reflected. “I know myself better now, so I know every day will be different.”
Sinner’s serve wasn’t enough to prevent his energetic American opponent from taking the lead in the second set at Hard Rock Stadium. Michelsen looked more nervous on serve at 5-3, however, and Sinner expertly took advantage of the counterattack to keep alive his hopes of a 1,000th Masters win in straight sets for the 14th straight set.
Michelsen regained his composure to force a tiebreak, and Sinner opened the match with a stunning backhand baseline winner. Although Michelson quickly scored two points later, Sinner won six of the next seven points to seal the victory and improve the pair’s record in the Lexus ATP Head2Head Series to 3-0.
Since losing to Ben Shelton in Shanghai in 2023, Sinner has won his past 28 matches against American opponents. The 24-year-old Italian is the third player to reach the quarter-finals in the first five matches of the Miami Open at Itau, joining Yannick Noah and Stefan Edberg.
