Miami Open: Yannik Sinner breaks Novak Djokovic’s record of consecutive wins at ATP Masters 1000 event

Jannik Sinner defeated Frenchman Corentin Moutet at the Miami Open, breaking Novak Djokovic’s streak of 10 consecutive set wins at ATP Masters 1000 events.

The 24-year-old Italian world number two Sinner won the 25th and 26th set at the sport’s highest level below a Grand Slam, 6-1 6-4 in 71 minutes.

Sinner equaled the record of 24 straight sets held by 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic, who defeated Damir Zuhur in the first match.

“I’m very happy. This sport is unpredictable, so we try to stay focused and we’ll see what happens in the next round,” Sinner said.

Sinner, a four-time Grand Slam winner, has won the past two Masters 1000 events – in Indian Wells earlier this month and in Paris in November – without dropping a set.

The former world number one dominated from the start against Mutai, winning 19 of the match’s first 26 points before taking the first set in 22 minutes.

Subsequently, Sinner won the fourth break point in the fifth game of the second set, ending Mutai’s resistance, and then successfully served to win.

He will face American Alex Michelson in the round of 16 as he continues his bid to become the first man to complete a “sunshine double” – winning Indian Wells and the Miami Open back-to-back – since Roger Federer achieved the feat in 2017.
