Martin Landaluce earned a landmark victory on Sunday, defeating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6(2) in the third round of the Miami Open in Itau. With this win, the Spaniard advances to the fourth round of the ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time in #NextGenATP.

In his first Lexus ATP Head2Head match against Khachanov, the 20-year-old displayed remarkable authority and composure. Despite facing an opponent nine years his senior, the Spaniard controlled the match from the start, hitting 25 winners to Khachanov’s 12. Landalus’ serve also proved effective, scoring 78% (23/32) of his first serve points according to Infosys ATP statistics, sealing the victory in 1 hour and 32 minutes.

The result is the latest highlight of Landalus’ fateful week in Miami. The Spaniard has already had an impressive run as a qualifier, which also included an upset victory over 17th seed Luciano Dadri in the second round. The 20-year-old jumped 13 places to No. 123 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings following his third-round win. The 2022 U.S. Open men’s champion had just two tour-level wins heading into the tournament, the first of which came against Jaume Munar in Miami in 2024.

The young Spaniard’s next test will be a fourth-round clash with Sebastian Korda, who defeated world number one Carlos Alcaraz earlier on Sunday.
