Jannik Sinner’s victory at the BNP Paribas Open helped him reduce Carlos Alcaraz’s lead in the PIF ATP Rankings. Sinner lifted the ATP Masters 1000 trophy for the sixth time, earning 1,000 points and cutting Alcaraz’s pre-Indian Wells lead from 2,800 points to 2,150 points.
Attention now turns to the Miami Open in Itau, where Sinner has the opportunity to further develop her game. The Italian is not competing in Florida in 2025, meaning he has no points to defend during these two weeks. Therefore, each victory will directly increase his ranking total.

However, Alcaraz also has very few points after last year’s heavy first-round loss to David Goffin, which left him with just 10 points in two weeks. The world’s No. 1 will be motivated to respondDaniil Medvedev ended the 2026 season with a perfect 16-0 start in the Indian Wells semifinals.
Miami also holds extra significance for Alcaraz, who became the youngest champion in tournament history in 2022 at just 18 years old. It represents Alcaraz’s best chance to extend his lead before the tour switches to clay, where the 22-year-old faces heavy defensive pressure.

Outside of Florida, the dynamic between the two is changing, too. Alcaraz has 4,300 points on clay, including titles in Monte Carlo, Rome and Roland Garros, as well as a runner-up finish in Barcelona. By contrast, Sinner had no points to defend before Rome and then racked up 1,850 points at the Italian Masters 1000 event and Roland Garros, giving him a chance to compete for top spot in the coming weeks.
Even so, the Italian aims to apply immediate pressure in Miami, where he has reached three finals in four appearances and lifts the trophy in 2024.
Alcaraz and Sinner were Miami’s No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, and could only meet in the finals. If the match comes to fruition, it will mark the 17th chapter of their Lexus ATP head-to-head series, which has quickly become a decisive showdown on the ATP Tour.
If Alcaraz maintains or even expands his upside during his time in Miami, he’ll give himself valuable breathing room before heading into the most defense-heavy part of the calendar. This scenario would further strengthen his hold on the top spot while allowing him to start building a lead in total weeks. Spaniard will tie Sinner’s 66-week milestone in early April, no matter what happens in Florida.
