Thousands of fans surround the Indian Wells Tennis Garden to watch the world’s best tennis players compete. One of those participating in the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday happens to be ATP No. 1 Club member Andre Agassi.

The 2001 Indian Wells champion watched from the sidelines of Stadium 4 as American Marcos Giron beat Mariano Navone 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

“If he comes out to support you, you don’t want to let him down. You definitely want to perform well,” Giron told ATPTour.com. “After losing the first game, I had a feeling in my mind, ‘You can’t lose.’ If he goes out and you don’t perform well, it would be a little bit bad. But he just wants the best out of the players.

“I know winning or losing doesn’t matter, even if you want to. But what matters is what you can do in real time.”

This isn’t the first time Giron has enjoyed the presence of Andre Agassi in his penalty area. Two years ago in Newport, the former PIF ATP No. 1 lifted the trophy against home favorites.

“It’s crazy,” Giron said. “Ten years ago, I couldn’t have imagined that I would be playing in Indian Wells and that he would be in a box at Stadium 4 watching me play in the first round of a tournament.”

Giron and Agassi have spent a lot of time together in Las Vegas over the years and have stayed in touch even when they’re not together. So what is it like to have a 60-time tour-level winner next to him?

“He sees the game from a different level. He can drill down into all these details,” Giron said. “But during the game, it depends on what’s needed. Usually it’s more about just being there and making some adjustments.”
