Flavio Coboli continued his quest for a third ATP Tour title on Thursday, defeating China’s Wu Yibing 7-6(4), 6-1 at the HSBC Telecom Tournament in Mexico.
The Italian, who is the highest-ranked player remaining in Acapulco at No. 20 in the PIF ATP rankings, arrived in Mexico after reaching the semi-finals in Delray Beach for the second week in a row.
According to Infosys ATP statistics, although Coboli hit just 49% of his first serve points, he won 83% (30/36) of them. The 23-year-old saved all eight break points he faced, six of which came in the second set. Coboli shook off a 15/40 deficit in the final three service games to seal the victory after 1 hour and 35 minutes.
“I think when you’re not playing the way you want to play but you still stay positive – I think that’s [great] To me, because this has never happened in the past. So now it’s much better and I’m very proud,” said Coboly, who would later partner Grigor Dimitrov in the doubles quarterfinals.
“I really appreciate my attitude on the pitch because the opponents are not easy [Wu] I think he should have won the first set. I put a lot of effort into the match and I thought I played really well in the second set. “
The fifth seed, who won the ATP 250 event in Bucharest and the ATP 500 event in Hamburg last year, will next face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic or French southpaw Terence Atmane.
