De Minaur beats Auger-Aliassime to win Rotterdam title: “Third time lucky!”

Australia erased two previous final defeats and won first indoor trophy

Alex de Minaur’s persistence finally paid off at the ABN AMRO Open on Sunday.

The Australian top seed fittingly produced his best performance of the week, defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-2 and claiming his first ATP 500 indoor title. De Minaur has suffered losses in the past two Rotterdam finals, but he was crisp and calm in every aspect against Auger-Aliassime, who requested an off-court medical timeout midway through the second set.

“That’s what it’s all about: doing the best I can and dealing with the situation,” De Minaur said of his final match, in which he faced no break points, according to Infosys ATP Statistics. “As the game goes on you try to find solutions and try to give yourself the best chance to perform better the next day and that’s exactly what I did. I’m very happy with my performance today.

“Third time lucky… I’m very excited, very happy. It ended up being a great week in Rotterdam. It’s a place I always feel really good about. I was just one step away in previous years, so it feels great to finally lift the title.”

Auger-Aliassime won the title in Montpellier last week and is now on an eight-game winning streak. The Canadian is aiming for a ninth career indoor title – further cementing his reputation as one of the most dangerous players indoors.

After a cautious start for the top two seeds, De Minaur hit two inspired winners in the sixth game of the first set to earn the decisive break – the first time Auger-Aliassime’s serve had been broken since his second-round victory over Stan Wawrinka in Montpellier.

De Minaur carried his momentum into the second set and broke serve again in the fifth game, getting to the baseline and dominating the exchange with more aggression. Shortly after, Auger-Aliassime left the court for treatment and came back looking less explosive than usual. De Minaur recognized his opportunity and continued to be ruthless, eventually closing out the match to reduce his Lexus ATP head-to-head deficit against the Canadian to 2-3.
