Englishman Jack Pinnington Jones’ dream at the Dallas Open was ended by veteran Marin Cilic in the quarter-finals.
The 22-year-old advanced to the main draw through two rounds of qualifying and then defeated world No. 20 Flavio Coboli of Italy and No. 68 American Elliott Spitzri to reach the quarterfinals.
But when Pinnington Jones participated in the ATP Tour quarter-finals for the first time in his career, he was defeated by 2014 US Open champion Cilic 6-1 6-4 in just 78 minutes.
The 37-year-old former world No. 3 will compete for a spot in the final against the winner of the U.S. Open between top seeds Taylor Fritz and Sebastian Korda.
At the Qatar Open, Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko followed up her stunning victory over Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina and defeated former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko to reach the final.
