Former Nexo Dallas Open champion Tommy Paul was pushed to the brink in his opening match on Wednesday but found a way past 2022 finalist Jenson Brooksby to advance into the second round of the ATP 500.

In a match that lasted 2 hours and 25 minutes, Paul defeated fellow American Brooksby 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4). The fifth seed hit 18 forehand winners and was outstanding after his first serve in the third set, scoring 21 of his 23 points.

“I feel like he can move the ball all over the floor and move you around,” Paul said. “I like to feel like I’m moving well, so I make it hard for him to score. I was a lot more relaxed than I usually am against Jenson, and the first set and a half was a lot faster than usual, so it was a little different. I’m happy to get through it.”

Paul reached the semi-finals last season after reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open last month and lifting the trophy in 2024 when the tournament was still at the ATP 250 level. The 28-year-old leads Brooksby 3-1 in the Lexus ATP Head2Head Series and next faces Miomir Kecmanovic.

American Ethan Quinn defeated wild card player Trevor Svajda 7-6(3), 7-5 in Dallas to advance to the second round. Quinn advanced to the third round at the Australian Open last month and scored a dramatic first-round victory over Hungary’s Fabian Marossan in the clay-court first round of the Davis Cup qualifying tournament on Saturday. Paul also scored a victory for Team USA at the same tournament in Hungary.

The PIF ATP Ranking No. 74 bounced back from a first-set loss with confidence and won 87% (41/47) of her first-serve points against Svajda, winning after one hour and 47 minutes, according to Infosys ATP Statistics. Quinn will face Marin Cilic in the second round. The Croatian earned his 600th Tour win on Tuesday.
