It’s not often that you see a Croatian and a Frenchman at a barbecue restaurant in Dallas, Texas. But that’s the nature of the ATP Tour, and the world’s greatest tennis players, like 2014 U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic and 2025 breakout southpaw Terrence Altman, can enjoy the spectacle in the cities they visit.

Europeans learned about local barbecue from the grill masters at Hutchins BBQ, and they were even able to survey multiple active smokers and ask questions about how many calories the food was cooked, what wood was used, and more before trying a meal in person at the Nexo Dallas Open.

“It was a great day, a great experience,” Cilic said. “First time here [for barbecue] Texas definitely makes it more special. And then seeing how the meat is made and how much care goes into the food and all the preparation, it’s definitely worth it.

“We ended up trying it and it was an incredible experience and one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. So I’ll definitely be back. And of course, looking forward to a great week in Dallas to start.”

Cilic and Atman went to the restaurant in the morning and there was already a long line outside. As competitors sampled ribs, brisket, “Texas Twinkies” and more at the ATP 500 event in Texas, they quickly understood why.

“Honestly, today’s barbecue experience was incredible. I’ll never forget it,” Altman said. “It was awesome to share this with Marin. The meat was absolutely crazy, and trying to see the process of everything, seeing the machines, the smokers, and trying the food was really incredible.

“I’m glad I got the chance to see this and hopefully I can come back next year.”

Cilic will start his Nexo Dallas Open against sixth seed Tian. The victory for the former PIF ATP No. 3 player will mark his 600th tour singles victory. Altman will face eighth seed Frances Tiafoe in the first round.
