Tommy Paul and Ethan Quinn led the United States to take the initiative against Hungary in the first round of the 2026 Davis Cup qualifiers.
Paul set the tone for the opening match with a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Zsombor Piros, before Quinn’s dramatic 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(11) victory over Fabian Marozsan in Hungary gave the former champion a 2-0 lead. Quinn saved four match points in a tense final-set tiebreaker, leaving the U.S. needing just one more win to seal the win on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Jurij Rodionov scored for Austria against Japan on Saturday. The world No. 170 defeated Yoshihito Nishioka 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 to earn a dramatic 3-2 win for his country.
With the teams tied at 1-1 after the first day of play on Friday, Yosuke Watanuki and Takeru Yuzuki gave Japan the lead with a 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 6-4 victory over Alexander Eller and Lucas Midler in Tokyo.
However, Lucas Neumeier beat Shintaro Mochizuki 6-3, 6-3 before Rodionov ensured Austria progressed to the second round of qualifying, which will be held in September. The quarter-finals will be held in Bologna in November, with eight teams competing for the trophy over six days. Italy is the three-time defending champion.
Dino Prizmic beat Denmark’s Elmer Moeller 7-6(5), 7-6(2) to give Croatia a 3-1 win. Earlier, Nikolay Mektyk and Matt Pavic defeated Johannes Ingelson and Karl-Emil Overbeck 6-2, 7-5.

Germany also beat Peru on Saturday. Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz led 2-0 at the start of Friday, beating Ignacio Buse and Arklon Huertas Del Pino Cordova 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 to give their country an undisputed 3-0 lead. Germany is a three-time Davis Cup champion, last winning in 1993.
The Czech Republic will take a 2-0 lead over Sweden in Sunday’s match. Jiri Lehecka defeated Dragos Nicolae Madaras 6-3, 6-4 and Dalibor Svrcina defeated Olle Wallin 6-1, 6-3. India and Netherlands drew 1-1. Guy Den Ouden defeated Sumit Nagal 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 and Dhakshineswar Suresh defeated Jesper de Jong 6-4, 7-5. Belgium leads Bulgaria 2-0 thanks to first-day wins from Alexander Blokes and Raphael Collignon.
