History shows that the world’s top-ranked players often emerge at the Australian Open and Carlos Alcaraz will be looking to continue that precedent as he makes it two wins after his first Melbourne title and bids to become the youngest player to complete a career Grand Slam.

Eight members of the prestigious ATP No. 1 Club have won a total of 16 Australian Open titles while ranking high in the PIF ATP Rankings. Alcaraz’s arch-rival Yannik Sinner accomplished the feat last season, becoming only the second player to do so in the past five years (Novak Djokovic, 2021).

The player who won the AO world number one

A record ten-time champion Djokovic has won the AO Trophy six times, becoming the world’s number one, the most of any player. He first accomplished the feat in 2012, capping the tournament with a classic five-hour, 53-minute final victory over Rafael Nadal. The Serbian recently won the 2021 world number one title in Melbourne.

Alcaraz, 22, has reached the quarter-finals in Melbourne in each of the past two seasons. If the Spaniard goes all the way to the title, he will join Pete Sampras and Rafael Nadal as the only players to be ranked No. 1 in the world in the PIF ATP Rankings when lifting the Australian Open trophy for the first time.

Alcaraz’s only Grand Slam victory while maintaining No. 1 came at Wimbledon in 2023, where he beat Djokovic in five sets in the final, ending the Serbian’s 34-match winning streak at the All England Club. In 2022, Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open and became the world’s number one after this victory. At the age of 19, Alcaraz became the youngest number one player in the history of the PIF ATP Rankings.

Alcaraz added to his list of major titles by winning the French Open and U.S. Open in 2025, defeating Sinner in both finals. In New York, Alcaraz not only won the championship trophy, but also regained the number one spot in the PIF ATP rankings, ending Sinner’s 65-week debut reign.

Six-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz maintains a 16-4 record at the Australian Open heading into the semifinals against Alexander Zverev, according to the Infosys ATP Win-Loss Index. Last year, Alcaraz lost to Djokovic in four sets in the quarterfinals in three hours and 37 minutes.
