Alfie Hewitt beat doubles partner Gordon Reid to reach the men’s wheelchair singles semi-finals at the Australian Open, but the British pair’s bid for a seventh consecutive doubles title in Melbourne has ended.
Top seed and world No. 2 Hewitt, 28, moved one step closer to defending his singles title with a 6-2 6-3 victory in one hour and 33 minutes at Margaret Court Arena.
Last year he won his second Australian Open singles title, which was also his 10th Grand Slam singles title.
Hewitt will face Spain’s Martin de la Puente in the semifinals. The third seed defeated France’s Stephane Udet 6-3 6-2.
But in the doubles match, Hewitt and Reed were defeated in the tiebreaker and lost to Japan’s Toki Oda and Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez in the semifinals 6-4 2-6 10-4.
The British pair had won 18 of the previous 23 Grand Slam doubles titles.
In the four-doubles match, Britain’s Andy Lapthorne and Australia’s Heath Davidson will face top seeds Guy Sasson and Niels Vink in the final. They need to pass a 10-point tie-break to advance to the semi-finals 4-6 7-6 (10-8) 10-6.
