Australian Open 2026: Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula criticize cameras in players’ area at Melbourne Park

Six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek says players at the Australian Open are being watched “like animals in a zoo” by behind-the-scenes cameras.

Coco Gauff was filmed smashing her racket in the corridor of the Melbourne Park players’ area on Tuesday, prompting calls for more privacy from American players.

Since 2019, the Australian Open has been showing footage of the players’ area inside Rod Laver Arena, which includes the gym, warm-up area and corridors of the dressing rooms.

Other majors have more restricted camera access.

“Are we tennis players or animals in a zoo who are watched even if they poop?” said Swiatek of Poland, who lost in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Semi-finalist Jessica Pegula described the ongoing filming as an “invasion of privacy” that needed to be “reduced”.

“You feel like you’re under a microscope all the time,” the American added.

Event organizer Tennis Australia told BBC Sport the cameras were used to help create a “deeper connection” between fans and players.

“Striking the right balance between showcasing players’ personalities and skills while ensuring their comfort and privacy is a priority,” a statement read.
