Australian Open 2026: What are the preliminary rules for the tournament and other Grand Slam events?

Analysis by BBC chief weather presenter Matt Taylor
Melbourne will experience some wild temperature swings. It all depends on the city’s location on Australia’s southeast coast.
Between the inland deserts to the north and the frigid Southern Ocean and Antarctica to the south, rapid changes in wind direction may have you grabbing a fan one day and a sweater the next.
Australia’s outback heats up rapidly in summer, and any wind blowing from the north can bring scorching heat.
However, if southerly winds were used instead, sea surface temperatures would reach 16-18 degrees Celsius this time of year, the city’s own version of natural air conditioning.
If the source of the wind is far to the south, then you’re entering a colder environment and, of course, you’ll be wearing those warmer clothes.
