Australian Open: What is the Million Dollar One-Point Grand Slam and who is competing?

The Australian Open held its first single-point Grand Slam event in 2025, but with a prize fund of A$60,000 (£29,400) it attracted little attention.

Russia’s Andrei Rublev was the only player in the top 10 to take part, and his run ended when he hit his only serve into the net in the quarterfinals.

Australian professional Omar Jasika won the event against 16 amateurs (8 men and 8 women aged 15 to 72) against 16 professionals.

It is the latest attempt by tennis authorities to draw attention to the sport, following the introduction of a separate mixed doubles tournament ahead of the 2025 US Open.

Players in that match included Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud, Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper, Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, but doubles specialists Sara Errani and Andrea Vavasoli Vavassori) won.

Explaining the reasoning behind this unusual single-point Grand Slam, tournament director Craig Tiley said: “With stars such as Iga Swiatek, Jannik Sinner and Coco Gauff all committed to competing, coupled with ordinary Australians qualifying through the state championships, this is exactly what this event is about, bringing people together through tennis in an exciting and inclusive way.”
