Warriors’ pursuit of Jonathan Kuminga in limbo as trade deadline approaches – Basketball Insider

As the NBA trade deadline approaches on February 5, the Golden State Warriors find themselves increasingly at odds with forward Jonathan Kuminga. Multiple league insiders reported that the Golden State Warriors “can’t wait to get him out of the building.” This blunt assessment, coming from a source familiar with the situation, shows just how strained the relationship between the team and its young talent has become.
Kuminga, 23, has struggled to find consistent playing time this season. Although healthy, he has not played in a game since December 18. In limited playing time this year, he averaged 11.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.
Why the Warriors want to quit
Insiders point out that the reason for Golden State’s impatience goes beyond just on-court coordination. According to Tony Jones of The Athletic, the Warriors believe Kuminga wants to be a star rather than a supporting player. “He doesn’t want to be a role player. His ego is non-existent in that sense,” Jones said.
Sources pointed out that Kuminga has not fully adapted to head coach Steve Kerr’s system, especially in terms of spacing and defensive tasks. Teams expected him to get the most out of his athleticism next to stars like Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler, but that didn’t happen consistently.
Transaction value at lows
While the Warriors may be eager to move on, Kuminga’s trade value is reportedly at an “all-time low.” That’s a major hurdle for the Golden State Warriors, who hope to get a meaningful return in any trade. Teams may be hesitant to offer a high-impact player when Kuminga’s recent benching and limited production raises questions about his fit in other systems.
Due to Kuminga’s current contract structure, he is only eligible for a trade on January 15th. The window opens just weeks before the deadline, shortening Golden State’s timeline for exploring options.
Potential landing sites and prospects
Several teams in the league have already shown interest in Kuminga. The Sacramento Kings have been most frequently linked to the Warriors, with their front office reaching out to the Warriors front office. But finding a deal that satisfies both sides remains difficult, especially since Sacramento avoids a huge long-term salary commitment in return.
Other teams such as the Portland Trail Blazers, Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans have also surfaced in rumors, but no concrete offers have surfaced.
