Sebastian Baez maintained his perfect start to the 2026 season at the ASB Classic in Oakland on Monday, defeating U.S. qualifier Emilio Nava 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the second round.
The Argentine won all three singles matches at the Fed Cup last week, including a win over top-10 star Taylor Fritz. The seventh seed was pushed to the limit in his first match against Nava in Auckland but produced enough quality in the closing stages, including several stunning lobs, to advance in the pair’s first Lexus ATP head-to-head meeting.
The 39th-ranked player in the PIF ATP Rankings will next face American Jenson Brooksby, who beat New Zealand wildcard James Watt 6-4, 6-3. Brooksby reached the semifinals in 2023 in Oakland.
Cameron Norrie, who grew up in Auckland, beat Hugo Gaston 6-3, 6-4 in the hard-court tournament this week. Norrie, a British left-hander who reached the finals in Auckland in 2019 and 2023, will face either Roberto Bautista Agut or Giovanni Mpehi Pericad in the second round. He holds a 9-4 record in tournaments, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
Francisco Comesana defeated Valentin Royer 6-4, 6-4 to set up a showdown with Ben Shelton, and Eliot Spizzirri beat world No. 69 Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 6-3 for the PIF ATP The biggest win of his career in the rankings.
